Types of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers come in a wide variety of types and brands. Dr. Bawa offers the following dermal fillers:

Restylane®

As the first hyaluronic acid filler to be approved by the FDA, Restylane® is a group of popular hyaluronic acid dermal fillers used to smooth out moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and plump up lips. Restylane® can be used to treat lost volume in the midface, laugh lines, marionette lines, thin lips, upper lip lines, and more.

All Restylane® products are hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers, but they vary somewhat when it comes to thickness and particle size. Restylane®, Restylane Kysse™, Restylane Silk™, Restylane Lyft™, Restylane Defyne™, and Restylane Refyne™ are all unique versions developed to address specific areas. Thus, Restylane® is both versatile and extremely capable when treating facial aging. Each Restylane® injectable addresses a different concern; for example, Restylane Kysse™ can subtly enhance the fullness of the lip body and add definition to the border to create soft, natural looking lips.

Sculptra®

Sculptra® is the first injectable treatment of its kind to be approved by the FDA. It effectively treats hollow areas around the chin, cheeks, temples, or décolletage.

Rather than using hyaluronic acid, like many other filler brands, Sculptra® uses polylactic acid. This formula helps volumize tissue by stimulating natural collagen production in the body.

Sculptra® is great for all ages. Dr. Bawa can evaluate your treatment options at your in-office or virtual consultation.

Injections are administered in an office setting and take about 30 minutes to an hour.

We numb the area with topical medication prior to any filler injections. Dr. Bawa’s advanced injecting techniques allow for minimal discomfort.

Dr. Bawa recommends receiving Sculptra® in multiple sessions spaced about two weeks apart.

Sculptra® is renowned for its long-lasting results. Sculptra® produces results that can endure two to three years once a full series of treatments has been completed.

Belotero®

Belotero® is an FDA-approved filler that mainly consists of hyaluronic acid. It is most commonly used to fill in moderate to severe nasolabial folds, but it can also treat the chin, cheeks, forehead, and lips.

Patients with mild to moderate lines around the mouth, nose, and eyes are excellent candidates and can have great results with Belotero®.

Depending upon the number of areas being treated, the procedure can take from about 30 minutes to an hour.

We numb the area with topical medication prior to any filler injections. Belotero’s® inclusion of lidocaine, an anesthetic, along with Dr. Bawa’s skill in injecting, allows for minimal discomfort during your injection experience.

Most patients gain their desired results in just one treatment. However, some patients require touch-up treatments.

On average, Belotero® results last six to 18 months. Belotero Basic and Balance last for about six months and they are used for lip enhancement or mild wrinkle treatment. Belotero Soft® and Intense can treat deeper folds and enhance the lips with results lasting about 12 months. Belotero Volume® lasts up to 18 months and restores lost volume to the cheeks and temples.

Radiesse®

Radiesse® is an injectable that can volumize specific areas of the face and hands. It stimulates your body’s natural collagen, filling in wrinkles long term and helping your skin develop new collagen in the process.

Radiesse® is currently the only dermal filler composed of calcium-based microspheres. With this unique formulation, Radiesse® stimulates the natural production of collagen and can be shaped and molded to provide definition to the face. Results often last up to a year or more in many patients.

The best candidates for Radiesse® are those who wish to improve mild, moderate, or severe wrinkles and folds on the face or hands, and those who wish to contour their features.

In general, Radiesse® injections take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes.

We numb the area with topical medication prior to any filler injections. Like other dermal fillers, Radiesse® contains lidocaine to increase comfort. This, combined with Dr. Bawa’s injection skills, make injections far more comfortable.

Some patients will only require treatments every 1-2 years, while others might want small maintenance injections in between treatments. Radiesse® works to build your own collagen so you should not need it as often as some fillers. Dr. Bawa and you will discuss multiple factors  to formulate the best injectable plan for you.

The duration of results will vary from patient to patient. However, since Radiesse® stimulates collagen production, the results often last longer than other fillers—usually between 12 and 18 months.
