What is Peyronie's Disease?
Peyronie’s disease is a disorder in which scar tissue (which in this case is called plaque) forms under the skin of the penis. The plaque is typically built up in an elastic membrane inside the penis, which plays an essential role in penile erection.
As it develops, this scar tissue limits the elastic property of the membrane, causing the penis to curve or bend, usually during an erection. These curves can make erections painful and may make sexual intercourse distressing, difficult, or even impossible in severe cases.
Peyronie's Disease Signs and Symptoms
If you relate to the situation mentioned above, we advise you to pay attention to the following signs and symptoms:
- Lumps on the sides of the penis, some of which may be hard. The plaque can be felt as lumps or bands of hard tissue.
- A bend to the penis. Due to this plaque, your penis may also curve upward or downward or bend to one side. This may be mildly or very pronounced, or anything in between.
- Erection problems. Peyronie’s disease is frequently linked to Erectile D Problems with getting or maintaining erections are usually one of the first signs of this condition.
- Size alterations. You might notice your penis becomes shorter when you start experiencing the signs and symptoms of Peyronie’s disease.
- Pain during erection and/ or sexual intercourse. You might have penile pain with or without an erection.
- Changes in penis shape. In some rare cases, the erect penis might also show indentations or even an hourglass-like appearance, with a narrow band around the shaft.

How Do Men Get Peyronie's Disease?
Doctors and researchers have not found the exact cause of this disease yet. It is believed to be a consequence of an autoimmune disease or due to acute or long-term injury to the penis. Although the cause has not been confirmed yet, it is known that certain factors can make you more prone to develop this condition, like a family history of Peyronie’s disease, aging, diabetes, connective tissue disorders, or having received surgical treatment for prostate cancer.
We can reach the diagnosis of this disease with a physical examination. The plaques can usually be felt through digital palpation, and in case you need to have your penis curvatures checked, you can have a substance injected that stiffens your penis. In some cases, we may use an ultrasound device to localize the plaque, check for calcium buildups and evaluate the blood flow in your penis.
Can Peyronie's Disease Go Away On Its Own?
In sporadic cases, this disease disappears without treatment. However, on most occasions, Peyronie’s disease remains and worsens over time. That is why receiving treatment is crucial to improve sexual and intimate health. Early treatment keeps it from getting worse and eases its symptoms, even if you have had the condition for some time.
What Treatments are Available for Peyronie's Disease?
There are many treatment alternatives for Peyronie’s disease. The choice will depend on multiple factors, including the severity of the disease, how long ago your first symptoms were detected, and your own medical history.
At Bawa Medical, Dr. Kanwal Bawa offers the following treatment options:
PRP/ PRFM (BawaShot®) for Peyronie’s Disease
One option is to inject platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM) into Peyronie’s disease penile plaque via the BawaShot®, an entirely painless injectable treatment that rejuvenates the penis from the inside out.
This process involves taking your own blood and then concentrating the natural healing growth factors. Once these healing factors are separated from the rest of the blood cells, they are re-injected painlessly into the patient’s penile area. PRFM is an enhanced version of PRP, as it contains more growth factors and stimulates more stem cells.
This non-surgical treatment has shown promising results, and patients who have received this PRFM therapy with the BawaShot® have reported a considerable improvement in their signs and symptoms.
Additionally, the BawaShot® offers far more benefits than the treatment of Peyronie’s disease symptoms. Visit our BawaShot® page to learn more about this transformative treatment.
Acoustic Wave Therapy for Peyronie’s Disease
BawaWave, our proprietary method for acoustic wave therapy, can break down or soften the scar tissue (plaque) associated with Peyronie’s disease, dealing effectively with most of its symptoms. This therapy stimulates the blood vessels and associated nerves in your penis.
Similar to the BawaShot®, acoustic wave therapy’s benefits do not stop at treating Peyronie’s disease; visit our acoustic wave therapy for men page to learn more.
What Happens if Peyronie’s Disease is Left Untreated?
Untreated Peyronie’s disease can have long-term consequences for your health and personal life. Complications might include the inability to have sexual intercourse, affected sexual intimacy, anxiety about your sexual performance, and even difficulty in fathering a child.
Besides the consequences mentioned above, it is essential that this disease is diagnosed as soon as possible because it can be confused with more severe conditions. Epithelioid sarcoma of the penis, a rare malignant condition, has often been reported as showing similar signs and symptoms to Peyronie’s disease.
